Frequently Asked Questions About Pool Heating
Have queries about pool heating, heat pumps, or installations? Our experts have compiled answers to commonly asked questions about pool heaters, heat pumps, and related topics. If your question isn't listed, feel free to leave a comment or reach out to us for assistance.
What Size Pool Heater Do I Need?
For rectangular pools 14 X 28 feet or smaller, an 80,000 BTU heater suffices. With a solar cover, you can extend this to pools up to 18 X 36 feet. For larger pools exceeding 18 X 36 feet, opt for a heater with at least 100,000 BTUs. For round pools under 22 feet, an 80,000 BTU heater works well, while pools wider than 30 feet require a heater with at least 100,000 BTUs.

Pool Heat Pump Installation Guidelines
Swimming Pool Heat Pump Setup Guide
Proper Installation Techniques for a Pool Heat Pump
Your heat pump stands as a valuable investment and the most economical means to heat swimming pools and spas. Should you require assistance in operating or maintaining your heat pump, you can rely on the proficient and easily accessible customer support team at our website, specializing in pool heat pump solutions. We're here to assist you!
It may be advisable to engage a licensed electrician or gas professional to ensure the safe and proper installation of your heater. Keep in mind that each pool heater model comes with specific guidelines regarding clearance and ventilation, and it's essential to strictly adhere to the manufacturer's specifications.
Please consult your owner’s manual for comprehensive details.
Installation Suggestions By ensuring the correct installation and maintenance of your heat pump pool heater, you can extend its lifespan to five to ten years or more while optimizing energy efficiency.
We recommend hiring a qualified pool specialist or electrician for installation, particularly for electrical wiring and connections.
Heat pumps require ample air circulation and function optimally outdoors with sufficient clearance around the unit, free from any obstructions. Be meticulous in selecting the heater's location; opt for level ground near a pool pump or filter to ensure unrestricted airflow. Your owner’s manual will provide detailed instructions regarding proper clearance, the heater's placement in relation to your equipment, and the ideal unit location.
What is the ideal distance for installing a heat pump from my pool?
Position the heater as close to the filter as feasible, approximately 25 feet away from the pool. Installing it farther may result in heat loss as tubing is buried underground.
An "optimal" installation should leave about 24" of clearance around the unit with no obstructions overhead. While there may be exceptions, if you suspect one, feel free to contact us for clarification.
If you're uncertain about the heater pump's installation location, reach out to us to ensure the heater's capacity aligns with your pool's requirements and the distance between the heat pump and filter.
Operating a Heat Pump or Pool Heater Once the unit is wired and plumbed by a licensed professional, you're ready to activate it. Refer to your Owner's Manual for specific control instructions, as each pool heat pump model varies. Ensure all valves are open to allow water flow to the pool heat pump. Sometimes, valves may appear open but are closed. The heat pump will only operate if the water pump is running. In rare cases, the heat pump may run even if the water pump is off, typically on select plumbing installations where siphoning occurs; this should be rectified.
When the unit operates in heating mode, ensure that the air expelled from the top is cooler than the surrounding air, indicating proper functioning. If the heat pump continues to operate when the water pump is off, switch off the heater and contact us or the manufacturer. This may occur if the heater is set well below the pool water level or if the flow switch requires adjustment. Most heat pumps shut down below 50 degrees Fahrenheit and restart once the temperature rises above 50. Some heat pumps can operate below 50 degrees Fahrenheit with active hot Freon defrost. Enhance your heat pump's performance on cooler days by using a solar blanket on the water. In certain cases, the use of a solar blanket is essential for the heat pump to maintain high temperatures effectively.
If possible, run the heat pump continuously for 72 hours or during the warmest part of the day to achieve the desired pool temperature. We strongly recommend using a solar cover/blanket. After running the pool heat pump for some time, you may notice condensation around your equipment pad or within the unit.
If you suspect a leak, there are two methods to test it.
Turn off the pool heat pump while keeping the water pump running; you should observe the condensation drying up, indicating water is flowing through the unit without leaking. Alternatively, dip test strips into the condensation pool; absence of chlorine indicates no leaks.

Heat Pumps vs. Traditional Heaters
Pool Heating Solutions: Understanding Heat Pumps vs. Traditional Heaters
What Sets Heat Pumps Apart from Pool Heaters?
Heat pumps and traditional pool heaters offer distinct approaches to pool heating. While both serve the same purpose, they operate differently and cater to varying needs.
Understanding Heat Pumps: Heat pumps rely on electricity to transfer heat from one location to another, rather than generating heat directly like gas or propane heaters. This method proves to be more energy-efficient and environmentally friendly.
Exploring Pool Heat Pumps: Pool heat pumps are a sustainable option for heating pools, boasting lower annual operating costs and a longer lifespan of up to a decade or more with proper maintenance. By harnessing heat from the ambient air, they ensure efficient pool heating while minimizing energy consumption.
Ideal Applications: Swim Season
Compatible Pool Types: In-Ground, Above Ground
Pros: Low Operating Costs, Environmental Friendliness
Cons: Requires Warmer Ambient Temperatures, Higher Initial Cost
Cost Estimate:
- System unit cost range: $2400 - $4600
- Installation cost (approx): $350 - $950
Understanding Pool Heaters: Pool heaters, powered by natural gas or propane, excel in quickly heating pools, making them ideal for short-term or frequent pool use. They maintain consistent water temperatures regardless of external weather conditions.
Exploring Pool Heaters: Ideal for locations with average temperatures below 55 degrees, pool heaters offer rapid heating, ensuring comfort during shorter pool sessions. They are cost-effective for intermittent pool use, such as weekends or occasional dips.
Recommended Applications: All Conditions
Pros: Quick Pool Heating, Lower Initial Cost
Cons: High Operating Costs, Regular Maintenance Required
Cost Estimate:
- System unit cost range: $875 - $5400
- Installation cost: $350 - $850
Choosing the Right Heating Method:
When selecting a pool heating solution, consider factors such as desired pool usage frequency, pool size, weather conditions, fuel costs, and existing infrastructure. Evaluating these aspects will help you make an informed decision that aligns with your needs and budget.

Heat Pump Pool Heater Efficiency (COP)
Understanding Heat Pump Pool Heater Efficiency (COP)
What is COP? COP, or Coefficient of Performance, is a measure of efficiency used in heat transfer devices. It compares the efficiency of a device to a standard form of heating known as resistance heating, which has a COP of 1.
How Does COP Affect Operating Costs? A higher COP indicates greater efficiency. For instance, a heater with a COP of 6.21 is 6.21 times more efficient than resistance heating. The higher the COP, the lower the operating costs, making it a cost-effective option for pool heating.
What is BTU? BTU, or British Thermal Unit, is a unit used to measure heating capacity. It represents the amount of heat output a unit can produce.
Determining Pool Heat Pump Efficiency Heat pump efficiency is measured by COP, with higher numbers indicating greater efficiency. However, without a standardized test, comparing COPs of different models can be challenging. Manufacturers typically test at specific outdoor and pool temperatures, with COPs ranging from 3.0 to 7.0, equivalent to an efficiency of 300%–700%.
Determining Gas Pool Heater Efficiency Gas pool heaters undergo standard tests to determine their energy efficiency based on BTU output. Efficiency is the ratio of usable output to energy input. Today, gas pool heaters boast efficiencies ranging from 89% to 95%, providing efficient heating solutions.
Understanding efficiency metrics like COP and BTU can help you make informed decisions when choosing a pool heating system.
